EMI Music Enters Into Agreement With InMotion

Posted by: mwatkins    in Publishing News

Under an agreement between EMI Music and InMotion Entertainment, music fans can now buy and download music directly to portable devices at major US airports. InMotion, the US’s largest airport-based electronics and entertainment retailer, will now make a selection of EMI Music’s key current and catalog albums and singles available for consumers to sample, purchase and download directly from its in-store PlayPoint Media Hotspot kiosks. Fans will be able to use PlayPoint’s touch screen stations to preview and buy full albums and tracks and transfer them directly to a range of portable music devices, including iPods, to enjoy on their flights.

Beginning this month, 45 InMotion retailers located at more than 20 major US airports, including New York’s JFK, Los Angeles International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, and those in Miami, Atlanta Chicago, Dallas and more will feature current titles from artists ranging from Coldplay and Katy Perry to Al Green and Lady Antebellum. A rotation of new and catalogue titles will be featured on an ongoing basis.

InMotion will make albums available for $11.99. Downloads will be available as DRM-free MP3s in high quality audio (256 kilobits per second).

“This is a great new opportunity for us to help connect the artists with fans,” said Eden Goldberg, VP of Marketing and Business Development at InMotion Entertainment. “By offering a ‘fueling station’ for their portable devices, consumers now have an easy way to discover and buy new music they can enjoy on their travels.”

Micro-blogging is a craze that is sweeping the globe. Described as “like a blog, but much smaller,” users are normally limited to a maximum of 140 characters per post. These messages can be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3, or the web.

“When we were introduced to micro-blogging, we knew that it was the answer to a question we had. How can we serve this community of artist when they don’t have the confidence to write a formally formatted press release? ” says Dave King, publisher of online Blues publication Cross Harp Chronicles and owner of the publicity firm Just Roots PR.

“Daily we were receiving notices from musicians regarding upcoming gigs, or planned album releases, that were complete in so much as they answered the essential ‘why, what, where, when and how,’ but little else.

“We could not issue these as press releases as they didn’t follow an accepted format, so what were we to do?”

Twitter was the first such service to which King was introduced. Introduced in July 2006, Twitter won the Web Award in the blog category at the 2007 South by Southwest Conference in Austin, Texas.

As with everything that proves a leader, and demonstrates an ability to fill a need, there has been a proliferation of Twitter clones born worldwide. According to some sources, the number of such services worldwide approach 200 in number.

“We knew that if we were to create a network of such micro-blogs and find an aggregate to deliver our messages to these sites simultaneously, we could optimize our reach and offer the artist truly increased exposure.” King continues. ” So we researched this trend and have identified the leaders.”

The leaders in this field have some truly unusual names. This list that King has put together includes fifteen of the biggest sites. This includes Pownce, which integrates micro-blogging with file sharing and event invitations; Spoink,a multi-media micro-blogging service that integrates blogging, pod casting, telephony and SMS testing, and supports all major mobile audio, video and picture formats; Plurk, which utilizes a rich interface and horizontal time line to add a spatial dimension to micro-blogging; and open source contender Identi.ca launched in July 2008, built on an open micro-blogging tool Laconia. As well as the leader, Twitter.

The majority of micro-blog entries King makes are normally accompanied with a link to the larger story, and in some cases photos, audio and video-links , which really make each entry come alive.

“This is one of the platforms we are developing to truly take Blues, Jazz and Roots music into the 21st century.” concludes King.

If you are a Blues, Jazz, or Roots musician, and interested in optimizing your personal exposure…

Or a journalist, blogger, radio or TV talk show host, or engaged in the music industry in whatever capacity…

Or a music fan and wish to be kept up to date on what is happening with these musics…

Look for justrootspr on Twitter or any of the major micro-blogging sites. Ask to become a “follower,” or social media “friend” and receive two F–ree gifts for a limited time.

Pandora Media, Inc. (www.pandora.com), the premier provider of personalized radio service online, announced today the hire of Dan Gerber as a senior account manager for the east coast. Prior to joining Pandora, Gerber was doing a second stint with CNET as the east coast regional sales manager, representing Last.fm and GameSpot under the CBSi Games, Music & Lifestyle division.

“We’re delighted that Dan has joined our east coast sales team. GRAMMY-winning recording artist Neil Diamond will be honored as the 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year, it was announced today by Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the MusiCares Foundation and The Recording Academy, and John Branca, Board Chair of the MusiCares Foundation. Proceeds from the annual GRAMMY Week gala dinner and concert honoring Diamond — to be held in Los Angeles on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, two days prior to the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards — will provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures that music people have a place to turn to in times of financial, medical and personal need.

The legendary singer, songwriter and performer is being honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year in recognition of his exceptional artistic achievements as well as his philanthropic work, which has included many generous charitable donations over the years. Most recently, Diamond has been donating 100 percent of merchandise sales from his October concerts in Houston, Dallas and Oklahoma City to the hurricane relief efforts in Texas for areas ravaged by Hurricane Ike.

“As we enter the next 50 years for The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Awards, and approach the 20th anniversary of our MusiCares Foundation, it is fitting that we honor a most enduring artist and songwriter whose musical influence is truly unmatched — the extraordinary Neil Diamond,” said Portnow.

“Neil’s exceptionally versatile and rich body of work, combined with his magnetic performances, are a hallmark of his artistic career,” added Branca. “And we look forward to paying tribute to him during GRAMMY Week.”

The 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year gala will begin with a special reception and silent auction that will offer an exclusive and unparalleled selection of luxury items, VIP experiences and one-of-a-kind celebrity memorabilia for bidding guests. The reception will also feature a special online auction presented by Julien’s Auctions and will broadcast live worldwide on Auction Network with real-time interactive bidding technology. The auction will be followed by a gala dinner, an award presentation and a star-studded tribute concert. The MusiCares Person of the Year tribute ceremony, chaired by Irving Azoff and Marshall Gelfand, is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week. The celebration culminates with the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The telecast will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

With a career spanning four decades that has seen more than 125 million records sold, 36 Top 40 hits and thousands of sold-out shows all over the globe, Neil Diamond remains one of the most vital and innovative forces in modern music. The 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year honor is just the latest of many notable awards the singer has earned, including a GRAMMY, 12 GRAMMY nominations, a Golden Globe and a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart for his latest album Home Before Dark. Diamond has also been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and is the recipient of that organization’s prestigious Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award.

Diamond’s career took off in the late 1960s with a series of hits that began with “Solitary Man” — a song that would forever define him as a singular figure in music. As an American solo artist during a time when British groups were the rage, he paved the way for the 1970s singer/songwriter movement to come. Diamond’s next hit “Cherry, Cherry” was an infectious blast of joyful pop rock that suggested this was an artist of considerable range. Diamond found himself in great demand as an artist and a songwriter, especially after the Monkees had No. 1 and No. 2 hits, respectively, with his compositions “I’m A Believer” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You.”

Over the next five years, Diamond would further demonstrate his musical range as he recorded some of his most beloved compositions, including “Brooklyn Roads,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show,” “Cracklin’ Rose,” “I Am…I Said,” and “Song Sung Blue.” In the summer of 1972, Diamond had played 10 sold-out nights at the famed Greek Theatre in Los Angeles that were captured on the multi-platinum Hot August Night, a double-record set that demonstrated Diamond’s growing status as a superstar concert sensation. In 1973, Diamond released one of his most unusual, yet highly successful, albums — an introspective soundtrack to the film version of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, for which he won a GRAMMY Award.

Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, he became increasingly popular as a live performer, breaking numerous attendance records in America and abroad, and winning honors as the top solo performing artist of the ’90s. He also remained productive as a recording artist, releasing everything from the forward-thinking Headed For The Future, and the retrospective Up On The Roof — Song From The Brill Building, to Hot August Night II and two popular Christmas albums. In 1996 he released Tennessee Moon, an album celebrating his country roots, as well as an extremely successful boxed set In My Lifetime. This same period found Diamond’s past work being rediscovered by a new generation of fans through hit versions of his past classics, including UB40’s global smash version of “Red, Red Wine” and Urge Overkill’s faithful, yet edgy, rendition of “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

In 2001 after a number of years collaborating as a songwriter and even covering the songs of other writers, Diamond marked a new century with Three Chord Opera — a powerful album that was the first collection of songs he had written by himself in a quarter century. 12 Songs followed in 2005, entering the charts at No. 4 and marking his first collaboration with famed six-time GRAMMY-winning producer Rick Rubin. Home Before Dark, Diamond’s latest project, found him working once more with Rubin, and debuted at No. 1 — the singer’s first chart-topping debut.

With these albums, Diamond has earned another new generation of listeners for whom his timeless songs speak as loudly as his newest creations. As Diamond approaches his second half-century as a songwriter, he has almost become a genre in his own right. Reflecting on this, he pointed out, “There’s probably a little category called ‘Neil Diamond’ which is a broad spectrum of rock and roll, mixed in with theatrical music, mixed in with country music, mixed in with Latin music, mixed in with Jewish melodies, throw a little dash of Afro-Cuban music in with some ballroom dancing too.”

Lala is unveiling the first and only free fully licensed service to instantly provide anywhere Web access to an existing music library such as iTunes. Replacing the outdated approach of uploading MP3 files from a PC, Lala introduces a licensed technology to instantly match songs from consumers’ personal music libraries with the Web- based catalog on lala.com.

Adding new music to a licensed collection is easier and less expensive than ever. Sample any full song or complete album for free. Add songs to a Web collection for only 10 cents, and buy DRM-free MP3 downloads for as low as an additional 79 cents.

“We live our lives in a browser, whether it’s emailing, watching television shows or using Facebook,” said Geoff Ralston, CEO of Lala. “When I launched Yahoo! Mail, few thought hundreds of millions would depend on Web email. My music belongs online in the same way. Will there be anything without a browser in 5 years?”

Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari browsers on both Windows and Mac OS are supported.

Major and Independent Labels Support

All four major labels including EMI Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have agreements with Lala to stream and sell music.

And unlike ad-supported music sites, Lala has garnered support from publishers and over 170,000 independent labels and distributors.

“We thank Lala for their support of A2IM and the independent music community and congratulate them on the launch of their new service which includes tens of thousands of independent artists, labels, aggregators and distributors,” said Rich Bengloff, President of The American Association For Independent Music (A2IM). “As the primary advocacy group for the independent music community, we also applaud Lala for recognizing the value of independent labels and artists to their business and providing inclusion to the independent community in their launch.”

Bertelsmann Launches New Music Rights Business

Posted by: mwatkins    in Publishing News

Bertelsmann has begun to build a new music rights business under the well-known BMG brand, in response to the strong music industry trend toward autonomous, service-oriented artists. BMG Rights Management, headquartered in Berlin, plans to offer custom-tailored services for songwriters and performers who want competent support in the creation, marketing and licensing, collection and accounting as well as advance financing of their music repertoire.

“We are focusing precisely on that area of the music industry which promises growth,” explained Hartwig Masuch, CEO of BMG Rights Management, at the presentation of his company’s innovative business model and strategy. “Music is being used more intensively and exploited more comprehensively than ever before - beyond the traditional distribution of recorded music: on a growing number of online and mobile platforms, in productions of movies, TV programs and commercials, on radio and TV broadcast, in concerts and in video games. Today, a music writer or performer can derive significantly more income from the rights to his work than before. This is where we want to position ourselves with customized, flexible services as well as transparent accounting.” A full market entry is scheduled for 2009; at present, the organizational, legal and staff groundwork is being laid.

BMG Rights Management launches with a selection of European music catalogs which the company retained from the portfolio of the former Sony BMG joint venture (now Sony Music Entertainment Inc.). These catalogs, which encompass the recordings of more than 200 artists, provide BMG Rights Management with a positive result and a relevant market position from the outset. The rights portfolio will rapidly be expanded to include other European artists, and eventually beyond Europe. The new company’s core competency will be in advising songwriters and performers in building their repertoire, supporting them with marketing and licensing services, and providing transparent coverage of all their rights management needs. It will also provide appropriate advance financing during the rights-building process.

”BMG Rights Management can work inexpensively and efficiently,” explained Masuch. The company not only offers artists and writers autonomy and guidance in an increasingly fragmented market, but also a share of the income that is in most cases higher. “We want our partners to be more involved in a meaningful use of the budgets, and hence in efficient, cost-conscious processes. This includes giving them more say in the choice of marketing paths,” so Masuch. “We want to create a significant added value for authors, artists and other rights owners based on deeply responsible partnerships with our clients.”

BMG Rights Management launches with the building blocks in place: an established brand, strong catalogs, a respected management with a wide-ranging network and experience in music publishing spanning two decades, and the advantage of being part of an international media company. The Group it is part of represents financial soundness and capacity to invest, as well as a direct link to other subsidiaries with relevant businesses. For instance, RTL Group’s production and broadcasting business makes it one of the foremost owners and users of music rights in Europe. Arvato, meanwhile, is one of the world’s leading service providers to the music industry in terms of CD and DVD replication and the distribution of recorded music.

“In five years time, BMG Rights Management will have become established as one of the first ports of call for artists in Europe who want to ensure competent, transparent, comprehensive and efficient management of their rights,” declared Masuch.
